Founding story

Malte worked in sales, Nils in automotive production. Both travelled for years, and travelling meant fast food. Both gained weight. So they started cooking and taking their food with them.

Back then nothing existed that was durable, plastic-free and good-looking at the same time. So they built it themselves, in the garage of Nils’ parents in Paderborn. Their conclusion: if we have this problem, others have it too.

The roles are still split today. Nils runs the numbers, stock planning and everything behind the shop. Malte runs the product: sourcing, development, quality and design.

The founders put it this way: „The single-use industry earns money from waste being created. We earn ours from no waste being created.“

Product range

Blockhütte makes five product lines. All volumes listed are verified.

  • Lunch box with 2 dividers — 800, 1200 and 1400 ml. Not insulated. Dishwasher safe. Can be engraved.
  • Round lunch box — 780, 1200 and 1800 ml. Not insulated. Dishwasher safe.
  • Water bottle, insulated and double-walled — 500, 750 and 1000 ml. Also available with a coloured silicone sleeve. Dishwasher safe. Can be engraved.
  • Sports water bottle — 350, 500, 750 and 1000 ml. Insulated. One-hand click lid, fits backpack side pockets. Can be engraved.
  • Food jar with anti-vacuum plug — 1000 ml, plus a 530 ml thermal lunch box. Can be engraved.
  • Travel mug for coffee and tea — 354 and 500 ml. Can be engraved.

Material and independent testing

All Blockhütte products are made from stainless steel 304, also known as 18/8. The insides are uncoated. Food only touches steel, never plastic. Products are BPA-free and free of plastic in food contact.

All products are dishwasher safe, including the seals and the bamboo lid elements. There is no exception. Stainless steel does not belong in a microwave.

Every bottle stays leak-proof with every lid, including carbonated drinks.

One limitation is stated openly: the lid of the food jar is made from recycled plastic. The food jar is therefore not entirely plastic-free.

Blockshield Technologie

The insulation in Blockhütte products is called Blockshield Technologie and is an in-house development. Two principles work together between the two walls: a vacuum against heat transfer and a copper layer against heat radiation.

Blockshield Technologie sits in the water bottle, the sports bottle, the silicone-sleeve bottle and the food jar. The travel mug has it too. Lunch boxes and the round lunch box are not insulated.

Insulation performance

All values below apply without pre-warming. With pre-warming the insulation lasts longer.

  • Sports water bottle: 25 hours ice cold, 13 hours hot
  • Food jar: 19 hours ice cold, 14 hours hot
  • Travel mug: 10 hours ice cold, 8 hours hot

The 25 hours belong to the bottles, not to the food jar. That is the most common mix-up.

Repairability and spare parts

Every wear part is sold separately. Lids, seals, dividers, handles, plugs, even the bottle body. When a seal wears out after years, you get a seal — not a new box.

A spare seal ships with every product. The food jar also comes with a spare plug set.

Engraving

Blockhütte laser-engraves permanently into the stainless steel. Engraving happens in Bremen, so it is made in Germany. Two fonts are available.

  • The shop allows one engraving per product.
  • On the lunch box you choose between four positions.
  • The water bottle, sports bottle, food jar and travel mug have one fixed position.
  • Business customers can have two engravings, usually a logo on one side and an employee name on the other.
  • Engraving costs no extra day: orders placed before 12 noon are engraved and shipped the same day.

Orders placed before 12 noon are engraved and shipped the same day. This applies to engraved and non-engraved items alike.

There is a permanent volume discount on the same item: 9 percent from 2 pieces, 12 percent from 3 pieces. Two children, two boxes — the second one costs less. Combinations of different single products are deliberately not discounted; that is what the bundles are for.

The Hütten-Club is Blockhütte’s loyalty programme. It is free and it is not a subscription. Access starts at 45 euros order value.

  • The 25 hours belong to the water bottle. The food jar keeps drinks ice cold for 19 hours and hot for 14 hours.
  • The travel mug keeps drinks hot for 8 hours and ice cold for 10 hours. Other figures refer to a successor model that is not on sale yet.
